Korean skincare is known for its meticulous attention to detail and a layered approach that aims to take care of the skin in depth. Although not everyone uses exactly 10 steps every day, and some people may find that fewer steps work better for them, the 10 classic steps of Korean skincare are:
1. Oil-based makeup remover:
Use a cleansing oil to dissolve makeup and oil-based impurities such as sebum and sunscreen residues.
2. Water-based detergent:
Follow with a water-based cleanser to remove all remaining impurities and to clean the skin thoroughly without drying it out.
3. Exfoliating (2-3 times a week):
Use a chemical exfoliant (such as an AHA, BHA product) or a physical exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and promote cell renewal. This step should not be done every day, so as not to irritate the skin.
4. Toner:
Apply a toner to rebalance the pH of the skin and prepare it to better absorb the subsequent products that will be applied. Generally, Korean tonics tend to be very moisturizing and soothing.
5. Essence:
Essence is a light moisturizing product that helps improve the skin's hydration rate and stimulate its renewal.
6. Serum/Ampoule:
Use a serum or ampoule to address specific skin problems, such as pigmentation, wrinkles, or redness.
7. Sheet masks (1-2 times a week):
Foil masks offer an explosion of hydration and nutrients. They are ideal for relaxing and giving the skin extra care. Even this step is not necessary every day.
8. Eye contour:
Apply an eye cream to moisturize and protect the delicate skin around the eyes, thus reducing the formation of wrinkles and dark circles.
9. Moisturizing:
Use a moisturizer to seal all previous products and maintain skin hydration. Choose a light or heavy texture depending on your skin type and your needs.
10. Sunscreen (daytime):
Sun protection is essential to protect the skin from UV damage and prevent premature skin aging. It must be applied as the final step in the morning.
### Important Notes:
- Personalization: These steps can be customized according to the needs of your skin and may not be necessary for everyone. Start with what you feel is most suitable for your skin and add or remove steps as needed.
- Consistency: A fundamental principle is to apply products from those with a lighter base to those heavier.
- Evening Routine: In the evening, omit sunscreen and instead it may be useful to include a product with specific treatment such as a richer night cream.
It is always advisable to do a patch test for each new product and possibly consult a dermatologist to customize the routine according to your specific needs.
